Social Media Predictions for 2022
It’s no secret that the social media landscape is ever-evolving. Want to know what to expect in the new year? Here are my predictions:
1. Short Form Video Content
TikTok will dominate the social media space. TikTok has seen undeniably growth recently. In fact, the term 'TikTok' saw an increase in mentions and was the first non-Facebook app to reach 3 million global downloads. With fast growth, it's easy to assume it's a passing fad, but that is not the case. It continues to grow and be one of the main platforms to focus on short form video content.
In 2022, we'll continue to see the rise of TikTok as more brands explore how they can leverage the app's popularity to expand brand awareness and reach new audiences. Even more interesting? Google Search Trends shows that TikTok completely dominates over Instagram’s short-form video content.
2. Vertical First Videos
To put this into context, Youtube videos are typically shot and edited in landscape orientation, while TikTok videos and Instagram stories use portrait orientation. When video alone (no mention of types of video) was on the watch list for social media trends, it was horizontal that was the focus. In 2022, all the major social media networks will be moving toward the norm of vertical video. It’s going to become increasingly out of touch to share horizontal video content on social.
With the dramatic increase of content viewing on mobile devices versus desktop, vertical videos on social media are becoming the new normal. Think about it, with this new focus on vertical videos, social media video marketing is simply adapting to the way that we create and consume content. Our phones are typically held and used vertically and videos are often shot that way.
3. Ad spend is moving to smaller networks
We are moving away from the ad giants of Facebook and Instagram. Consumers are more receptive to advertising on smaller channels like TikTok and Pinterest. Research is showing an increase demand over the last two years for ads on these networks and this trend will continue to grow in 2022. TikTok is leading the charge. The smaller networks aren’t as saturated with ads as Facebook and Instagram, so users will have less ads fatigue. The ad space is also getting more creative. They are more entertaining and less disruptive, increasing conversions and all-round good vibes for businesses.
4. Live videos and stories will be mainstream
The authenticity and dynamic nature of live video can’t be matched. It is one of the best ways to engage with your audience in real time and this will continue to grow in 2022. You have a video camera in your pocket and can go LIVE at anytime. Just remember to not drink and live. Seriously, it’s happened. The trend of showcasing behind-the-scenes business operations, in the moment actions and live conversations has hooked consumers of content. Businesses will showcase more brand stories through live videos. With the feature of ‘swipe up,’ it’s easy to direct people to your brand website. And if these live sessions involve increased customer engagement, they get viral in just a matter of time.
5. Smaller is better.
You don't need international fame to achieve high levels of success; just a small, active following. This is called “Being Micro Famous”
When we think of fame, we often think of celebrities on magazine covers. But we might not have what it takes to be magazine-cover-famous. You do have what it takes to be microfamous.
In 2022, it is going to be more important than ever to be the expert in your micro niche. People want to know specifically what you do and what you sell. Focusing on a smaller audience will get them more interested in buying your products or services because you market exactly what they are looking for.
